Phonophobia: The Fear of Noises and Voices

Phonophobia is the abnormal and persistent fear of noises, voices and even one’s own voice.  It is also the fear of telephones.  Those with Phonophobia fear sounds like traffic, doors closing, kitchen sounds, and loud speech.  In severe cases they may even fear the sound of their own voice.  The sound of a balloon popping can cause them to go into a severe state of panic.
A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities or persons.  The main symptom is an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Other phobia symptoms include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and an overall feeling of dread.  Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders.
