Odynophobia: The Fear of Pain

Odynophobia or Odynephobia is the abnormal and persistent fear of pain. This phobia is very common in those who suffer from chronic pain and it’s definitely one I can relate to.  Sean Mackey, MD, PhD said, “I can tell you as a pain doctor that fear is the no. 1 issue that I deal with in helping people to better manage their chronic pain.”  Odynophobia is also known as Algophobia.
A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities or persons.  The main symptom is an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Other phobia symptoms include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and an overall feeling of dread.  Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders.
Do you suffer from Odynophobia?  Please share your story.  How was it triggered and how does it affect your life?
