Phagophobia: The Fear of Swallowing, Eating or of Being Eaten

Phagophobia is the abnormal and persistent fear of swallowing, eating or of being eaten.  Many things can trigger this phobia.  I remember being afraid to swallow pills as a child, but after I did it the first time I was okay with it.  Some never get over this fear and find it impossible to swallow the smallest things.  This includes even food for some. Witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event like a shark attack could be a possible trigger for those who fear being eaten.
A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities or persons.  The main symptom is an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Other phobia symptoms include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and an overall feeling of dread.  Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders.
