Xenophobia: The Fear of Strangers or Foreigners

The StrangersXenophobia is the persistent and abnormal fear of strangers or foreigners.  Xenophobia has been around for centuries.  People will argue that it’s not the same as racism, but it kind of sounds that way. If you fear and dislike a person because of where they come from, then you’re racist, right?

We have seen this a lot in the United States since 9/11.  Everyone seems to cringe every time they see someone of Arabic descent in their town or on the same plane as them.  It’s hard to trust them because of everything that has happened, but we have to remember that Americans have turned their back on us to and tried to destroy our country.  You can’t judge a book by its cover.

Wiccaphobia: The Fear of Witches and Witchcraft

Letters On Demonology and WitchcraftWiccaphobia is the irrational and persistent fear of witches or witchcraft.  Accounts of witches and witchcraft date back to the 1400’s and I’m sure accounts of this phobia began around the same time.

Witches and witchcraft always get portrayed in a negative light and this is where this phobia arises. This phobia may also be triggered if someone has a negative experience with a witch or witchcraft.

Those who have Wiccaphobia may also have Samhainophobia, the fear of Halloween because Halloween is often associated with witches and witchcraft.

Vaccinophobia: The Fear of Vaccines

Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and EffectiveVaccinophobia is the irrational and persistent fear of vaccines.  This one has been in the news quite a bit over the last few years.  First parents didn’t want their children to get vaccinated, because of the possibility of autism among other things.  Then there was this whole H1N1 (swine flu) thing.

Whether or not vaccines are dangerous, those with this phobia may have the tendency to take their fears a little overboard.  That’s just the deal with a phobia.  They have a reason to be afraid, but it soon becomes very irrational.  For example:  I have a fear of fire.  My reasoning for it is very legitimate, but sleeping with a fire extinguisher is a little too much.

Taurophobia may be brought on by a traumatic event that involves a bull such as an attack or unexpected close encounter.  Some people say that they never knew they had this phobia until the very first time they saw a bull.  A bull’s intimidating size may have a lot to do with this phobia.

Tapinophobia: The Fear of Being Contagious

Tapinophobia is the irrational and persistent fear of being contagious.  Those who suffer from this phobia will do everything they can do to prevent getting sick.  They will eat the healthiest foods and may even take supplements to ensure that they stay healthy.

Acute Contagious DiseasesTapinophobics are often thought of as very courteous people because they do so much to prevent getting others sick.  They will isolate themselves if they are sick and they will take whatever other precautions that are necessary.  While they may be protecting others though, this creates debilitating effects on their own lives.  Their whole lives become centered on disease prevention.  Eventually there’s no room for anything else.

Ranidaphobia: The Fear of Frogs

Ranidaphobia is the abnormal and persistent fear of frogs.  I can understand this one,  but I definitely don't have it.  I have a huge fascination with frogs.  Ceramic ones and yes, even real ones.  I will run outside after it rains and try to catch one.  I know a lot of people who collect clowns and it makes me cringe, but I collect frogs so now I know that there's someone out there who would cringe at the thought of that.
