Ochlophobia: The Fear of Crowds or Mobs


Ochlophobia is the abnormal and persistent fear of crowds or mobs.  This phobia is classified as a social phobia and a social anxiety disorder.  Those who suffer from Ochlophobia are afraid of getting trampled by a crowd, getting a deadly disease from someone in a crowd or of getting lost in a crowd of people.  This phobia is most common in shy people.  Ochlophobia is also known as Agoraphobia, Enochlophobia and Demophobia.
A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities or persons.  The main symptom is an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Other phobia symptoms include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and an overall feeling of dread.  Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders.
