Cleptophobia: The Fear of Stealing

Cleptophobia is the abnormal and persistent fear of stealing.  It can also mean the abnormal and persistent fear of being robbed which is also known as Harpaxophobia. These phobias often occur together.  Cleptophobia is often caused by a negative or traumatic experience. Recovering thieves may develop this phobia because they are afraid they will fall back into their old ways. They may become almost paranoid that they are going to steal something. As with the fear of being robbed, if a person has been robbed before they become extremely fearful that it will happen again and this fear eventually turns into a phobia.  This phobia is also known as Kleptophobia.

A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities or persons.  The main symptom is an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Other phobia symptoms include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and an overall feeling of dread.  Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders.

Cleithrophobia: The Fear of Being Locked in an Enclosed Place

Cleithrophobia is the abnormal and persistent fear of being locked in an enclosed place.  This one I can relate to a certain extent.  I hate having to get in an elevator because I fear that I will get stuck in it.  If I get locked in a room I instantly panic.  I can’t even watch someone on television stuck in an enclosed space because it makes me nauseous.  Cleithrophobia is also known as Cleisiophobia.
