Dysmorphophobia: The Fear of Deformity

Diagnostic DysmorphologyDysmorphophobia is the irrational and persistent fear of deformities. Those with this phobia are terrified that they will become deformed in some way.  There’s not a lot of information out there about this one so I’m relying on those of you who suffer from it to fill in the blanks for the rest of us. Are there specific deformities that are feared more than others?

A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities or persons.  The main symptom is an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Other phobia symptoms include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and an overall feeling of dread.  Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders.

Do you suffer from Dysmorphophobia?  How was it triggered and how does it affect your life?
