Pnigophobia: The Fear of Choking or Being Smothered

Pnigophobia is the abnormal and persistent fear of choking or being smothered. Those with this phobia will eat slowly and won’t eat certain foods because they’re afraid they may choke on them. They don’t like wrapping up in heavy blankets or doing anything that may cause labored breathing. Pnigophobia is also known as Pnigerphobia .
A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities or persons.  The main symptom is an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Other phobia symptoms include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and an overall feeling of dread.  Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders.
