Scabiophobia is the irrational and persistent fear of scabies. Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites. It is often referred to as body lice. There is some room for legitimate fear here, but as with all phobias the fear become over exaggerated.
Those who suffer from Scabiophobia panic anytime they have an itch because they fear they may have scabies. They are terrified at the possibility that tiny little bugs could be crawling on their skin.
A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities or persons. The main symptom is an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Other phobia symptoms include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and an overall feeling of dread. Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders.
